Poddar did his graduation in Commerce stream from Calcutta University. He started his career in 1955 and had exposure in various industries like cement, engineering, sugar, electrical and even travel busness. Two decades ago, he entered the financial services and made his mark in merchant banking, portfolio management, promotion of public issues and fixed deposits etc. At an early stage in his financial career, he was recognised as one of the best investment and stock market analyst. Media took early note of his expertise in Investment Management and he was called a BLUE CHIP CONSULTANT by The Telegraph and NON COMPROMISING TYPE by Business World in 1985. Poddar was a regular contributor to varoius Publications like Economic Times, Business Standard, Bussiness India,Business World, Dalal Street Journal etc. He had also appeared frequently in Electronic media including BBC, Doordarshan and CNBC. Infact, Dateline Monitor had called him a HARD NOSED JOURNALIST in 1993. He had addressed a large number of seminars and workshops on capital market and even used to be invited by Allahabad Banks and Calcutta Stock Exchange to take classes on subject of merchant banking for their officers. In recognition of the services rendered by him to the capital market, Poddar was elected member of the Calcutta Stock Exchange under professional category.

Anil Poddar has been with his father D. P. Poddar in the business since last 20 years and has developed a great deal of expertise in managing investments. Recognised by the media in his own right, his comments, interviews and articles have frequently appeared in Publications like Business Today, Economic Times, Dalal Street Journal, Dateline Business etc. He has an uncanny feel of the financial and stock markets.
